When you are planning to import alcohol (spirit drinks) into the European Union, as a business, bear in mind the following requirements:

Making a long story short, let’s jump into the allowed quantity of spirit allowed per container/bottle:
- 100ml
- 200ml
- 350ml
- 500ml
- 700ml
- 1000ml

Allowed alcohol content
In the European Union (EU), the alcohol content of spirits is regulated by the European Union Spirits Regulation and relevant standards for alcoholic beverages. According to EU regulations, there are no references to Tequila specifically, hence the alcohol content for tequila must meet the “other spirit drinks” criteria:
Alcohol Content for Tequila in the EU
- Minimum Alcohol by Volume (ABV): Tequila must have a minimum alcohol content of 37,5% ABV.
- Maximum Alcohol by Volume (ABV): With exceptions, spirits don’t have a specific maximum ABV set by the EU. However, The CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila) ranges up to 55% ABV, depending on the production process and the producer’s choice.
These standards ensure that tequila sold within the EU meets specific quality and safety criteria. The rules align with the definitions and standards recognized internationally, particularly those established by Mexican regulations, as tequila is a protected designation of origin product. EUR-Lex reference & Official Journal of the European Union.
For practical purposes, most producers default to 38% or 40%, as for instance, in the USA, tequila must have a minimum ABV of 40%.
